Career Exploration

When you are embarking on your career search, you have many options. Knowing your interests- subjects in school, extra-curricular activities, or how you spend your free time- will assist you in exploring careers, career paths, or college majors that will best suit your individual needs.

Students are encouraged to access Naviance in order to assist in various tasks related to career explorations. Such tasks include: interest inventories, career profiling, and resume building.

Resume:

Your resume provides you with a list of what is asked for on many college, scholarship, and employment applications. Review your resume. Add or update anything that has changed since you have last reviewed it. Be sure to add any activities, awards, work experiences, or volunteer opportunities you have participated in during grades 9-12.

Vocational/Technical Schools offer short-term training for a wide variety of specific jobs, such as beauty, nursing, or auto repair. Certificates for some programs may take only a few weeks while others may take up to two years to complete. You may find some of these same programs are offered at community college for a lower cost.

On-the-job Training or Apprenticeship for some careers, such as masons, electricians, or home health aides, is the best preparation to work under highly skilled workers. These apprenticeships allow you to gain experience in the field, determine if you have an interest in the career, and create a network of contacts, while earning a salary.

Military may be a good option for those wishing to obtain specialized training and/or college financial assistance.
