Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60’s annual district-wide Black History Month celebration will have a different twist this year, with a new emphasis on the history of Black health and wellness. 

The celebration will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 25 at John Lewis Middle School, 600 S. Lewis Avenue. During the event, booths will be set up by local organizations, where families will have the opportunity to engage in Black History Month-themed activities, as well as learn about prominent and trailblazing African Americans in the healthcare industry. 

Attending families will receive passports, which will be stamped at each station after completing the corresponding activity. Once families have fully completed their passport, they will be provided a take-home meal. 

The change to a fair-style format was made amid Covid-19 health and safety concerns, to ensure social distancing and sanitized activity stations can be maintained. Face coverings will be required or all attendees, regardless of vaccination status, and District staff will work to limit the number of individuals at each station.

La celebración anual del Mes de la Historia Afroamericana en todo el distrito del Distrito Escolar de la Unidad Comunitaria de Waukegan #60 tendrá un giro diferente este año, con un nuevo énfasis en la historia de la salud y el bienestar afroamericana.

La celebración comenzará a las 6 p.m. el viernes 25 de febrero en la Escuela Intermedia John Lewis, 600 S. Lewis Avenue. Durante el evento, las organizaciones locales instalarán puestos, donde las familias tendrán la oportunidad de participar en actividades temáticas del Mes de la Historia Afroamericana, así como aprender sobre afroamericanos prominentes y pioneros en la industria de la salud.

Las familias asistentes recibirán pasaportes, que serán sellados en cada estación después de realizar la actividad correspondiente. Una vez que las familias hayan completado completamente su pasaporte, se les proporcionará una comida para llevar a casa.

El cambio a un formato de feria se realizó en medio de preocupaciones de salud y seguridad de Covid-19, para garantizar que se pueda mantener el distanciamiento social y las estaciones de actividad desinfectadas. Se requerirán cubiertas faciales para todos los asistentes, independientemente del estado de vacunación, y el personal del Distrito trabajará para limitar la cantidad de personas en cada estación.
