Ms. Minerva Cruz - Grade 11 Director, Washington Campus

Dear Bulldog Family,

It is with great pride and excitement that I write this letter of introduction to you as the newly appointed High School Director of the Eleventh Grade at the Washington Campus for the 2017-2018 school year. I am thrilled to begin the new school year at Waukegan High School, and look forward to meeting students, staff, parents, and community members.

This transition is a homecoming for me as I am returning to the high school. I worked previously at the Brookside Campus as the Dean of Instruction for the English Language Learners and the Associate Principal for Attendance, Discipline and Safety. After leaving the high school, I served as the Principal of Jack Benny Middle School for six years and spent a year at Daniel Webster Middle School. My return to Waukegan High School begins my nineteenth year as an administrator. I am elated to bring my skills as an educational leader to the school community and to work with each of you as a partner in education to ensure the success of our students.

As I make this important transition to the high school, I am aware of the anticipation and eagerness that accompanies new leadership in any organization. It is expected and understandable. I know that change can provoke excitement and anxiety. It is my goal to spend the first several months reacquainting myself with the high school community and its stakeholders. I want to learn about your hopes and dreams for our school. I believe that collaboration fosters ownership of a rich school culture. Supporting our kids to do well in school, and in their personal lives, is the center of the work we do as a school family. I am honored to serve this community, and I will work hard to gain your trust and respect.

Please feel free to stop in and introduce yourself to me. Besides being an administrator, I am the mother of a seventeen year-old son named Kahlo and a twenty-one year-old daughter named Athena. My husband and I have been married for twenty years. I enjoy reading, finding deals at thrift stores, and walking my German Shepard dog, Lily. I am a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago, where I studied psychology, Latin American history, bilingual education, and educational policy.

I hope you enjoy the remaining days of summer. I look forward to expanding my school family as a fellow Bulldog.
